Elder's day

Monash University celebrates Indigenous Elders at its annual Elders Day. Coordinated through theIndigenous Advisory Counciland the William Cooper Institute, Elders Day is a highlight on the Monash calendar.

Elders from all around Victoria are invited to join with members of Monash University Council, plus staff and students, for a forum and lunch hosted by the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor. The forum allows Monash to update Elders on our research, programs, and policies relating to Indigenous peoples and cultures. Previous forum topics have included; the role of Elders in higher education, cultural safety, and incorporating Indigenous perspectives into curricula. Open discussion is encouraged, and Elders can advise the University about education and employment priorities and aspirations in the local community.

The luncheon, hosted by the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor, is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with friends, and foster new friendships. It strengthens the strong bonds between Monash and Victorian Indigenous communities.

Highlights of Elders Day in previous years include an acoustic performance by Uncle Archie Roach, Uncle Herb Patten playing the gumleaf, performances by Kutcha Edwards, Benny Walker and Rheannan Port, tours of the Indigenous Garden on the Clayton campus, tours of the Briggs and Jackomos Halls of Residence, and an exhibition of Indigenous works from the Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA) permanent collection.
