Prato conferences

This conference brings together academics, practitioners in community and international development informatics as well as community archives. One of the key features of the conferences over the years has been informality and collegiality an a willingness to experiment with new ideas: an attempt to bring together people from many different countries (often 40 or more at an event), including many PhD students.

The first CIRN conference was held in late 2004, following the the Many Voices, Many Places Colloquium at the蒙纳sh Centre, Prato, Italy in September 2003. The Monash Centre is ideally suited for a small intimate events. Since then, Prato conferences have been held nearly every year, with other events in Cape Town and Brighton (UK) associated with the CIRN network, as well as associated workshops in Porto, Milton Keynes (Open University) and Montpellier.

"Constructing and sharing memory: Community informatics, identity and empowerment"

Conference Purpose

The characteristics of particular technologies have a role in shaping the ways in which memories are reproduced (consider the growth of blogs and wikis as 'instant history'). How do we constitute memory? What is its relationship to formal and informal stories that reside in communities? Is it linked to institutions and structures, or is community informatics supporting a separate public sphere (Habermas)? What is the place and role of community informatics in the development of new means to capture private and public memory?
