Industry project: Surfactant formulation

Industry project (PSC3211)

To ensure the job-readiness of our students we expose them to real-world projects in their final year of study.

The surfactant formulation project completed as part of unit PSC3211 is one such project. Designed by industry, these authentic projects allow students to apply their knowledge and develop teamwork, communication and problem solving skills. Most importantly, our students get experience communicating with Industry mentors in a professional setting.

Get involved

We rely on our industry partnerships to run this important unit. Our partner organisations benefit from a group of five students working for three months on their project(s). Our students have, over the last two years, generated some very interesting results for our industry partners.

What is a suitable project?

Our students are able to tackle projects that involve:

  • formulation work
  • solving current formulation problems
  • fundamental research on the role of surfactants in a formulation

Student’s capabilities

Our students have capabilities in:

  • Formulation Principles
  • Methodology (design of experiments)
  • analytical skills (especially HPLC)

How does the project work?

Projects run from February until June.

  • In February, industry mentors present their projects to students. Students are then given a project and form small teams. The industry mentor brief the students on the specific details of the project.
  • 学生们进行文献搜索和草案an experimental protocol detailing the experimental plan detailing the required materials and anticipated methods.
  • The experimental protocol is reviewed by the industry mentor to ensure feasibility
  • Results are collected, analysed and interpreted in a report
  • The final assessment consists of an oral presentation to mentors in June.

Experimental protocol

Our students learn extensively about Design of Experiments (DoE) in another parallel unit and are encouraged to use a DoE if applicable in this project.

This project is an excellent way for students to demonstrate their capacity to use a DoE and it will be part of their role to explain to mentors how the DoE works.

It is absolutely fine if mentors are not familiar with this experimental method. We can make sure that students' DoE is appropriate.

What commitment do we need from you?

We will need you to:

  • Select the project
  • Present the project to our students
  • Validate the protocol
  • Provide excipients and access to specialised equipment (if required)
  • Attend at final presentation (June)
